I got this book for Christmas and subsequently spent every free minute for the next 5 days engrossed in it. It is extremely funny and very interesting, Elaine Heney has an excellent writing style that makes it very easy to read (It was very good bedtime reading). As well as this, it is extremely informative and would be a great book for anyone wanting to bring on a young horse, whatever its background. Thoroughly recommend this book to anyone.

This is a must-read for any horse lover. I loved Elaine’s easy writing style and having read so many other horse training books this is definitely one to hold to heart. Ozzie’s story is so real and honest! For anyone working with their own young horse this book is full of great training tips and words of wisdom, which are like gold when your bringing on a horse. And if your not? Well, it is quite simply a lovely read.

The little book of good horsemanship is exactly that – the best of old and new ideas from around the world, explained simply, to help you become the best horse trainer and rider you can be. When I was six years old my riding instructor taught me that one of the most precious things a horseman has when riding are gentle hands. I was pretty impressed with how much he knew about horses and how he always seemed to get the best out of them, and so as I sat on my tiny woolly Shetland, who either walked, stopped, ate, went to the toilet or slept, I remarked to him one day that he must know everything about horses. He smiled and said that no one did. Horsemanship is a never ending education. Working in harmony with a horse is an art form, but its not meant to be rocket science. Understanding your horse’s perspective, being able to work with your horse in his time and always remembering that your horse has a reason for everything he does, are just some of the basic fundamentals of good horsemanship. Behind every great horse is a great trainer, and behind every great trainer is good horsemanship. Ive since moved on from that Shetland, but I still strive everyday to become the best horseperson I can be. There are a lot of small things in this book which have big effects when training horses. I like my horsemanship to be fun, safe, enjoyable and productive, and I like my horses happy, well trained and a pleasure to be around.
