Recommended people to buy horses from in Ireland

Here are two yards we recommend due to the quality of their horses & the training they have got, and the principals of the yard owners who will only recommend you a horse if he’s the right horse for you.

Olivia Johnson Kilmallock, Co. Limerick

Dave Kavanagh Loughshinny, North Co. Dublin

It would also be worthwhile to visit www.irishhorsemarkets.com where all sellers have to comply with a code of conduct when selling horses.

Buying a horse is a very easy process. Buying the wrong horse is also very easy, and can turn out to be an absolute nightmare, and can be difficult to sell on.

One of the most crucial factors when considering what horse to buy, is to get one which will suit your skills, ambition, confidence level and discipline of choice.

So if you’re just learning to ride, don’t fall in love with a national event horse who rides like a ferrari, and if you’re looking for a pony for your enthusiastic but slightly nervous daughter, don’t go for the shiniest sleekest model who is supposed to be eight years old and a pony club veteran, and instead is only three years old, totally unschooled (though yes still pretty!) and who will proceed to rip your daughters confidence into sheds as they sail off into the distance together (but not for long) in an attempt to break the land speed record.

What I am trying to say is that one of the most difficult things you can do is buy the Horse or pony who will suit you and keep you safe and happy and with whom you can have lots of fun with.

We do know a few people who will actually take the time & care to match you up to the right horse, rather than just sell you a random horse. If you want to be put in touch with them, just email the office and let us know.

One other useful tip – if you are a novice owner or rider, do not buy a very young or green horse who needs to be broken. In most situations, you will not learn together and instead it may become more like the blind leading the blind… just a cautionary warning, it happens more than you think…….

Good luck with your search!
